Cowley Manor, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
The burger at Cowley Manor in the Costwolds comes "on toasted brioche with cheese, bacon and fries." At £12 all in, how could I possibly refuse?
Immediately after we got married in August, me and the wife ran for the hills (together, you'll be glad to know). To the gently undulating hills of the Cotswolds, to be precise, where we luxuriated in the delightful environs of Cowley Manor...

The Pink & Lily is a lovely, traditional pub set high on the edge of the Chilterns where, on previous visits, I've enjoyed some good grub and ale writes Amy of food blog Pies and Fries. Following a recent refurbishment and menu revamp I decided it was time for me and The Ewing (my intrepid, burger-loving other half) to don our rural burger dectective caps and revisit it...

The Eight Bells, Saffron Walden, Essex
£10 buys you a homemade 7oz burger (with or without bacon and mature cheddar) and skinny fries. Problem is, it's bloody awful
Pavel Le Bouche of How Not To Do A Food Blog knows the Eight Bells in Safron Walden well – he worked there for two years while he was at college. A lot has changed since then, owners have come and gone, so Pavel returned, wondering if the ancient beamed pub still serves up a great burger...
